Happiness is like chocolate

"Life is a box of chocolates." Possibly. Emotions can feel like that. But you can open the box, look and pick out your favorite chocolate. Similarly, you can choose your emotions. Who wants to choose misery? Who wants to choose happiness?

Happiness can be fleeting. A win only lasts for a short time.

However, sustainable happiness is very possible. It is a practice. Who feels happy? Or angry? Or sad? Or disappointed? You.

All of these feelings come from within you. So, happiness is already inside you.

“Life is like a box of chocolates.” You know that quote from the famous movie, Forrest Gump, right?

Let’s say each of your feelings is a piece of chocolate. And happiness is your favorite type.

You reach in, without looking, and pick up a random piece.

It can be great, it can be average, or it can be nasty. What do you do when you pick up lousy chocolate?

You put it down, find something to wash down the bad taste in the mouth, and pick up different chocolate (probably your favorite type).

You can do that with your feelings too.

Of course, we don’t control our emotions, but we can practice not to let our feelings control us.

Let’s say you’re feeling crappy and today has started poorly.

You did the first step of the practice: recognizing your feelings!

All right, next, you step back from that crappy feeling, which is equivalent to putting that piece of chocolate down. Things happen, right?

So you were late for work, got criticized, contracts fell through, etc.

But those things already did happen; you already swallowed that piece of chocolate.

There’s no need to regurgitate the lousy taste. You can wash it down with water, or tea, or a vent with a good friend.

Then you reach into the box, eyes opened this time, and pick out your favorite. You come back to your center, reach within and pull out your happiness. Is it possible?

Yes. Is it difficult?

Maybe. But it IS possible.

It’s a practice that gets easier and better with time, just like anything.

It’s never too late for you to start your day again.

Whether it’s 5 am or 7 pm. You can always begin again.

I don’t think there’s a wrong time for chocolate!

So look at your box, pick out your favorite. Your happiness is waiting for you to unlock.
