What does it mean to live authentically?

That’s the question I get a lot.

Living authentically is living true to who you are. That’s easy to say but we often don’t think about it until we feel lost.

Living authentically is when our actions aligned with our beliefs, our values, and our feelings. Sound logical but almost like a “d’oh” response but how often do we face challenges and dilemmas in life and we just can’t reconcile how we feel and what we think?

We all have childhood and experiences and we grew up under society structure, peer pressure, education, etc. All of those shape our beliefs and when we don’t examine our mind, we can’t separate what is true for us and what beliefs did we just automatically take on.

What’s true for us might not be the popular opinion, might not be what your family want, might not be the easy route. But it is true for us. Living authentically is when you do things just because you want to, because it is right for you, because it is true for you, not because you should.

Living authentically is being who you are, recognizing your differences and accept all of that. Living authentically automatically shapes you to be more compassionate and non-judgmental towards others because you don’t have that inner struggle.

Living authentically is a journey because we’re constantly growing and evolving and we’d constantly learn about who we are. The journey might not be easy or smooth sailing but it is worth taking. After all, we’re the only ones that can take that journey.
